Valparaíso is a city you read by climbing it. Ride its century-old funiculars between hills, follow the street art, and let the fog roll in off the Pacific.

The day, stop by stop

  1. 9:30 AM

    Ride the Ascensor Reina Victoria

Start with one of the rickety wooden funiculars that haul you up the hillsides. Half the fun is that they still somehow work.

  2. 10:30 AM

    Get lost on Cerro Alegre

No map. Just wander the lanes following the murals — every wall, staircase and door is painted.

  3. 1:00 PM

Lunch with a view at a cerro café

Fresh ceviche and a glass of Casablanca white on a terrace hanging over the port.

  4. 3:30 PM

    La Sebastiana, Neruda's house

The poet's wonderfully eccentric clifftop home, with the best window in the city.

  5. 7:00 PM

Sunset and pisco on Cerro Concepción

Find a rooftop, order a pisco sour, and watch the fog swallow the lights of the port below.
